Avon is a small rural community, located in Latah County in Northern Idaho. The Avon Busy Bees Club is a group of Avon community women whose
purpose is to provide community service and social opportunities to area
residents and Club members'families. The women preserve and maintain the Avon Community
Church building which is now known as "The Clubhouse".
The Club was formed in the early 1920's. Its' primary purpose was then and remains to these days, "To bring the women of the Avon Community together in friendship."
Today the Club meets twice monthly in the historic Avon Community Church,
The second Thursday of each month is a regular business meeting and is held with members taking turns being hostess. The fourth Thursday of the month the women gather for workdays or social activities.
The major fund raising activity of the Club is the raffle of a quilt
that the women piece and hand quilt during the winter months. In June
the annual Avon Day is held with residents gathering for breakfast,
parade, games, crafts, and plant sale. The women also assist local blood
drives and participate in events sponsored by nearby communities.
In 1990 the Busy Bees published a collection of oral histories of the area as told by local residents, called Avon to Bear Creek, Stories Then
and Now. In 1995 A Country Daybook was published full of receipes, household hints
and storytelling.
In December the women put on a Christmas dinner for all the Avon
residents. The Church is filled with the sounds of voices and laughter
and the smells of turkey, evergreen, and the wood fire just as it has been
for last 70 years.
