Pat Cary Peek

Pat Cary Peek was born August 25, 1937 in the oil town of Hobbs, New Mexico. She was the third daughter of Robert Cary, a dark handsome oil worker who never stayed long in one place, and Emma Nevada Ray, a bright blue-eyed school cook who loved flowers and crocheting.

She grew up in Eugene, Oregon with her sisters and younger brother, attending public schools. She took to books like a bee takes to flowers and did well. She always loved to write and wrote stories and poems from a young age.

She graduated from high school in Prairie City, Oregon in 1955. She was the first in her family to attend college and worked to pay her way through the University of Oregon, earning a BS degree in elementary education in 1964 and an MS degree in 1970.

She moved to Idaho in 1980 to marry wildlife biologist James Peek and has lived outside Moscow, Idaho, since 1982.

Pat's writing expresses her love of nature and her fascination with history. She has had articles and stories published in Ranger Rick Magazine, N. W. Travel, the Eugene Register Guard and many others. Her first book, "One Winter in the Wilderness," won the Idaho Library Association's Book of the Year Award for 1998. Her second book, "Cougar Dave, Mountain Man of Idaho," was published in 2004.  Her third book, Silver threads, War in the Coeur d’ Alenes, 1891-
1892 was published in 2008
