Research Library

In the Centennial Annex is our large collection of books, pamphlets, personal records, business and government records, photographs, maps, and oral history transcripts; the collection is cataloged and easily accessible through guides, a card catalog, indexes, and a data base. Resources for genealogical research include cemetery records, transcriptions of birth, marriages and deaths from early local newspapers, obituaries, atlases, newspaper clippings, and probate records. We'll also help you find other local genealogical sources. There is no charge for researchers who conduct their own research, and except in unusual circumstances, we regret we are unable to accommodate personal electronic and digital equipment. There is a fee for those who wish off-site research assistance. We also charge for photocopies (.25/page) and for prints and scans of photographs.

For researchers who are not able to visit our library because of physical conditions or who cannot visit during our open hours, we will arrange to take materials to the Moscow Public Library.

For information and costs for these services, or to arrange for research materials at the Moscow Library, please contact us by mail at 327 East 2nd Street, Moscow, ID 83843, or by e-mail at lchlibrary@latah.id.us If you are a visitor to the area, our map will guide you to the Centennial Annex.

Programs for Educators

Would you like to involve your class or youth group in a personal exploration of the McConnell Mansion? A living history portrayal of the hired girl explores the concepts of old-fashioned and modern, thrift, and technology from her perspective of living in the year 1915. The one-hour program can be tailored to include hands-on artifacts and activities in the upstairs exhibits, and it can be shortened or lengthened to fit your schedule.

Carol Ryrie Brink in your Classroom
Moscow writer Carol Ryrie Brink, who won the prestigious Newbury Award for Caddie Woodlawn, can come to your classroom, in a living history portrayal, to tell the story of growing up around the turn of the 20th century with slides from her family album. She brings with her a suitcase full of vintage clothing and artifacts and has another suitcase full of vintage detachable collars, gloves, bow ties, hats, scarves and hats for the students to try on.

Interested in horses and agriculture?
The Horse Era program brings a work harness, different kinds of bridles, bits, horse shoes, feed, liniment, and slides and information on how we used horses for work, travel, and recreation. The program features many artifacts and gives students the opportunity to learn to harness a work horse.

Interested in technology?
The Mechanical World brings a variety of objects for students to try out, including a stereoscope, viewmaster, ink pens, a manual typewriter, and a student favorite - carbon paper. The program explores differences between electronic and mechanical devices in terms of culture, lifestyles, economics, and work.

Additional Services and Events
We are happy to work with you on a special program or theme, and our research library is open for student projects. We have reading copies of Carol Ryrie Brink's Idaho novels; a suitcase program; slide programs on the history of Moscow, Latah County, and the County's rural towns; and small exhibits to loan.

Connect-the-Spots
Connect-the-Spots: A Guide to Special Places in Latah County is your family’s resource to the many non-commercial cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities for children and youth in Latah County. The opportunities listed in the guide will educate and stimulate and are regularly available within the borders of our very own Latah County.

Organized by place, with an activities index on the back, Connect-the-Spots collects in one resource specific information about 85 recreational opportunities suitable for the entire family, including an activity or site description, location, cost, and date. Also included is contact information for the organization associated with the site or activity, including email and website addresses, where available.

Connect-the-Spots, a production of the Latah County Historical Society, originally was made possible by a grant from the Latah County Community Foundation.
