The National Register in Latah County

The National Register of Historic Places lists properties important in the history, architectural history, archaeology, engineering, and culture of the United States. Maintained by the National Park Service, the Register is expanded through nominations by individuals, organizations, state and local governments, and federal agencies.

What kinds of properties can be included?
The Register includes houses, commercial buildings, and bridges, as well as battlefields, parks, and archaeological sites. It includes districts which are groups of buildings, structures, or sites that make up a coherent whole, such as the Fort Russell Neighborhood District in Moscow or the Commercial Historic District in Potlatch. Finally, it includes large properties such as fountains and monuments.

What level of significance must a property have?
The Register includes properties determined to have significance at the national, state and local levels. It is designed to include properties of importance to people where they live, not just great national landmarks. A general store, a church, a downtown area, a home -- each may be eligible for placement in the Register.
