Vikings have always had a reputation for being brutal raiders and warriors with horned helmets in longboats. While this isn't totally false, not all vikings were like this. Many Vikings were actually farmers and didn't do much else. There are two Vikings in history that most people are familiar with. These are Eric the Red and Lief Ericson.
Lief Ericson was Eric's son, hence his name, and he is often credited with one of the many discoveries of America. The first Viking who actually discovered it though was a merchant blown off course, but obviously it wasn't colonized at all then. Eric the Red is the man who discovered Greenland, calling it that to attract settlers. (Greenland and Iceland should really switch names)
There were some Viking raids on churches and towns on the coast of places like England and Ireland, and the church of Lindesfarne was a major target. The vikings were beaten by William the Conqueror, and after that, they left England alone.
Olaf Tryggvason was a Viking emperor dude who helped spread Christianity among the Vikings. Leif was a Christian, but his father was not. Leif and Olaf worked to convert Eric, even though he was a firm believer in the Norse Gods. Olaf also sent Leif to Greenland to be a missionary there.
