As the end of the week progressed, we did notice that Ozzie's skin was getting some odd scabs on it, and on the evening of Sunday, September 31, we saw a little blood on his left front shoulder. Since the chemotherapy can result in a supressed immune system, we wanted to be sure if Ozzie got cuts, he might need to have antibiotics to help him heal. We called our vet at her home and were directed to clean the area and put an antibiotic on it. We did that and lathered Neosporin on his small cut. By morning the sore was healed, we could not find it.
To keep Ozzie's stress level down, we had not given him a bath since before this process started. He did have an unusual smell, but we attributed that to the things his body was going through. When we went in for a blood draw late Thursday afternoon, we talked with the vet about his skin. Even though they say dogs like Ozzie won't lose their hair, he was losing some in small clumps, but there were no bald spots. Our vet suggested we bathe him with an oatmeal shampoo, so we bought a bottle of Epi-Soothe from the vet, and I bathed Ozzie soon when we got home. The shampoo is to be left in his fur for 5-10 minutes, which was a *very* long time when one has a wet, shampooed dog in the bath tub.
But the Epi-Soothe shampoo worked well, Ozzie's skin and fur looked better, and he smelled nice, too.
