Ozzie's Lymphosarcoma Blog for Week of December 29, 2006 (chemo protocol week #17)

This week's chemo protocol is the "risky" Adriamycin. Ozzie's blood test results showed that he can have today's injection of Adriamycin; since the dog has to be still for quite some time, he is given a sedative to quiet him. We went to the vet's at 4:15 PM so Ozzie could have his sedative as well as the antihistamine that precedes this week's chemo injection. We waited the obligatory 20-30 minutes after the sedative and antihistamine to be sure they were active, and at 5:00 PM the lengthy injection of Adriamycin began. Differing from the prior two injections, this one went much more slowly, through a drip; we had dripped the chemo before, but not this slowly. The vet's assistant and I kept Ozzie quiet during the process which went to about 6:40 PM, a drip of about 100 minutes. The vet herself would check in on us frequently and monitor Ozzie's heart. All went well, and Ozzie and I were happy to be able to go home.

Friday evening Ozzie was very tired, as I was, too; the stress of keeping him still for so long took its toll on me. Ozzie snoozed a lot at home, but by Saturday morning he was back to his bouncy, playful self. He just seems so healthy, and except for the hair loss (thinning body hair and no whiskers), one would not know he was under a veterinarian's care.

Even though this week's chemo process was long, Ozzie hasn't seemed affected by it; he's been peppy and happy since Friday evening. He hadn't had a bath for a few weeks, so he got one on Wed afternoon.
