Ozzie's blood test results from Thursday afternoon were good; his PMNs were 3900, lower than usual, but still in the acceptable range; the PCV (packed cell volume, or HCT/hematocrit) number we were watching for his anemia was 37.5, better than last week. We will continue to give him the Lixotinic multi-vitamins.
Ozzie's chemo was scheduled for 4:30 PM, and at 2:00 PM I gave him a half tablet of the sedative; if he wasn't getting drowsy in an hour, I was to give another half tablet then. He wasn't sleepy, so I gave the second half tablet, but by the time we left for the appointment at the veterinarian's he wasn't very drowsy. So, when we reached the vet's office, Ozzie was given an antihistamine injection and a half strength sedative injection. Finally, he started to get sleepy...
The injection went well, it's hard to keep him still for the 30 minutes or longer. The vet handled the injection and monitored his heart while an assistant and I kept Ozzie quiet and still. All went well, and we all were relieved to have the regimen completed. Ozzie and I went home to watch game 5 of the World Series, and happily the Cardinals won and are the World Champions.
As with prior chemo injections, for the first 24 hours afterwards (through all of Sunday) I will be careful with Ozzie's feces, and I will douse with water the areas where he urinates in the backyard.
Friday evening Ozzie was very tired (and probably stressed out), he napped frequently. In the night, Ozzie woke me around 3:40 AM to go outside to pee, but he slept quietly and didn't seem nauseous. During the day on Saturday Ozzie seemed in good spirits; he didn't look uncomfortable from the chemo. Saturday evening he wanted to play with *all* his toys in his toy collection; each toy got a minute or so of attention and then it was off to the next toy. He was in a good mood Saturday.
Ozzie's whiskers are just about all gone; he has a few that are very short, but they are basically gone. Ozzie slept better Saturday night, but he woke me shortly after six o'clock to go outside to pee. He didn't settle down afterwards, maybe he was upset about something. Yet he had a good day Sunday, he looked and acted good, he had fun chasing squirrels in the backyard. He hasn't lost his appetite during the chemo regimen; he doesn't seem to drink much water, but he is getting a lot of water with his food, and he's getting fed four meals a day.
Ozzie had a good week, once we were a few days past the chemo on Friday. By Monday he was pretty much his old self, and by Tuesday he seemed to be a puppy again, playing and bounding about. I did give him a bath in the Epi-Soothe shampoo on Thursday afternoon. We didn't go in for a blood draw on Thursday of this week. Week 10 is an "off week" for any chemotherapy, so we will wait until next week for a blood draw and weigh-in on Thursday the 9th.
