Ozzie's Lymphosarcoma Blog for Week of June 22, 2007 (post chemo, still in remission)

Because it's been two weeks since Ozzie was last weighed, I took him in to the vet's on Friday morning; Ozzie weighed 42.8 pounds, a slight increase from the 42.4 two weeks ago. It's probably time to bathe Ozzie, too. I'm considering changing his dry dog food to something else with a lot of protein and fats and little (or no) carbs and sugars. Ozzie doesn't get a lot of dog food by volume; the canned n/d is high in calories (which is why I monitor his weight), so he doesn't get a lot in his bowl; plus, he gets four small meals a day to make it easier on is tummy (which may not be a problem since he's not getting chemo now). The Dog Cancer web site mentions three "store bought" dog foods for dogs with cancer. Ozzie is already eating the Prescription Diet n/d; the other two choices were Iams Puppy Chow and Innova's EVO dry food. I think Iams makes a "Smart Puppy" dry food now; I'll check into the EVO soon; it's sold at a local pet store.

I did buy a bag of the Innova EVO small bytes dog food; Ozzie likes it. I did some research on how many calories a 12-year-old dog that weighs 40-ish pounds should have each day. The answer seems to be about 1100 calories, so I calculated how much n/d and EVO he can have a day to take in 1100 calories. I need to remember that snacks, dog treats, need to be counted, too. So, Ozzie now has a half can of n.d canned food and one cup of the Innova EVO dry food; the math seems to come out to be about 1100 calories. I'll weigh him next week so we can see if this is too many calories.

The week has had nice weather, hot and toasty, but the evenings are always cool here. We get in a walk a day. Ozzie needed a bath, so I gave him one on Thursday; now he looks bright and shiny and smells better, too.
