Ozzie's Lymphosarcoma Blog for Week of March 16, 2007 (post chemo, now in remission)

Ozzie's lymphosarcoma still is in remission, from what we can tell. On Friday I took Ozzie to the vet's office to weigh him; his weight increase was good at first when he started chemo last fall, but two weeks ago he weighed 44.8 pounds, which is too much for him. Ozzie's weight was 43.4 pounds on Friday, which means a loss of about a pound over the last two weeks, which is good. So, maybe the walks are helping, the food reduction, or the diarrhea; we'll have him weighed again in a few more weeks and see what the pattern is.

Ozzie had three outings Thursday; he rode in the car with me to the Post Office in the morning, in the afternoon he rode with me to the recycling center, and then later Thursday afternoon we went for a walk to a nearby playfield.

This week started out with nice weather, spring could not be far away. The warm weather allowed Ozzie and me to get in a walk each day, but on Tuesday winter returned, we had "corn snow" that day, so we skipped a walk. We did get a walk in on Wednesday and Thursday in spite of the cooler weather.

Because of Ozzie's "condition," we probably over-react to every little thing that changes about Ozzie, but after dinner on Thursday, his pre-dinner that he gets around 4:00 PM, Ozzie threw up his (undigested) meal. Now we're wondering why that happened, is it related to his cancer, does it mean nothing or anything? I cannot recall Ozzie ever vomiting in the now 11 years (he was a adopted in mid-March of 1996) he's been a part of our family. I gave him a small meal of only the dry Iams dog food at 7:00 PM for his final dinner of the day, and we'll watch him to see if his tummy gets upset.

In other news, through this web site Ozzie now has an e-mail pen pal, a retriever named Maddie who is the same age as Ozzie and was also diagnosed with lymphosarcoma last August. About a month ago Maddie's owner Deb wrote on Maddie's behalf, Maddie had just "graduated" from the Madison-Wisconsin chemo protocol, and it was nice to exchange e-mails with someone whose dog was so similar to Ozzie. The bad news for Maddie now is that her cancer turned mean, her remission lasted just about three weeks, and the path ahead for her and Deb will be a difficult one. We think of Maddie often, and we send her and Deb our thoughts and prayers.
Below is a photo of Maddie at play; what a terrific dog she is!
